MOBS bussed in by
the authorities were still besieging the British and United States embassies
in Beijing last night as Nato's bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade
threatened diplomatic efforts to end the Balkans conflict.
Screaming slogans such as "Kill America", thousands of students and workers
pelted the missions with stones or fire bombs and beat Western journalists
and passers-by. Li Zhaoxing, the Chinese ambassador to Washington, expressed
fury at the bombing and hinted that Beijing might retaliate with a Security
Council veto of peace initiatives if "anyone tries to whitewash it [the
bombing] as a mistake"
